“Are You Proud of Your Country?”
Are you proud of our country? Well, I am! The United States is a wonderful
democratic society that should always be protected. It should always be protected
so, that the citizen always have the ability to govern themselves. Soldiers have battled
endless wars to keep this country free; and wanting to keep the citizen safe they often
sacrificed their lives in war. Because of their bravery Americans continue to live in a
land where they can vote for their leaders and express their own views. As
John. F. Kennedy said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you,
but ask what you can do for your country.” To me that is what democracy is, in part,
about – a society working together for a common dream. Americans should all
understand, whether or not they are in the service, that it is up to all Americans to
preserve the values that make America the home of the free.
I value living in a society where even as a 11 year old, I can speak my own mind.
For example, I could design a petition suggesting a change in my neighborhood and
with enough signatures from fellow Americans, I could succeed in making changes.
And even if those changes don't happen, I'm proud of living in a society where peoples
voices are heard and respected. I know from research that Libya and Sudan don't have
democratic society. I wish all countries could have democracy and that they can all
choose their own leaders. In the future, I wish I could live in a world where there was
democracy for all peoples of all nations so that everyone could enjoy the rights I do
without fear of being punished or physically harmed.
In my school, I get to experience democracy, also, by having the opportunity to
participate in Student Council. Students get to model our government by having the
right to speak up and say what is on their minds, and represent the views of their
classmates. Student Council members, also get to participate in important social
activities that help members of our country such as helping Veterans by sending cards
and collecting necessary items for them. Student Council reminds the students of how
they are a democracy and part of a greater democracy --- the United States of America.
I am proud to be part of this country where democracy is for everyone no matter what
a religion, age, or skin color is. Therefore it is for you and me, and it should
always be valued and protected.
